Goldendoodle coats come in 4 types:

Curly Coat: (the curl gene is KRT71): Curly coated goldendoodles have 2 copies of the curl gene (+/+) & the curly coat is often easy to see even at a young age. Many goldendoodle breeders claim a curly coat sheds less & is better for those with allergies. Geneticists have found this too not be the case, but rather, doodles with the double furnishing gene (F/F) shed less. Our mini Goldendoodle, Max, is an example of a curly coat.

Wavy Coat: (+/-). Wavy coated goldendoodles carry both a wavy gene & a curl gene. Our Hope is an example of a wavy coat & her fur is soft & velvety to the touch.

Straight Coat: (-/-). Straight coated Goldendoodles can look very similar to the wavy coated doodles. The only way to know the difference between a straight & wavy coated Goldendoodle is to do genetic testing. Straight coated goldendoodles get both of their straight coat genes from their Golden Retriever lines, but they have 1 or 2 copies of the Furnishing gene from the poodle line that gives them their teddy bear face with facial hair & beard & eyebrows.

Flat Coat (also known as Improper Coat): These pups do not carry the furnishings locus RSPO2 gene and are produced from parents that carry improper coats. The flat coated doodle has a muzzle that resembles a Golden Retriever’s and lacks the bearded look of the teddy bear goldendoodle. Flat coats can be produced in any generation even if they are bred back to a IC carrier poodle & this is another reason to buy from a breeder who does genetic testing. Flat coats are going to shed. We do NOT breed flat coated Goldendoodles. Without genetically testing breeding dogs, a breeder would not be able to predict what type of goldendoodle coat the puppies will have.
